Lead Designer

Purpose of the role

To design, develop, and implement solutions to complex business problems, collaborating with stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements, and design and implement solutions that meet those needs and create solutions that balance technology risks against business delivery, driving consistency. 

Accountabilities

• Design and development of solutions as products that can evolve, meeting business requirements that align with modern software engineering practices and automated delivery tooling. This includes identification and implementation of the technologies and platforms.
• Targeted design activities that apply an appropriate workload placement strategy and maximise the benefit of cloud capabilities such as elasticity, serverless, containerisation etc.
• Best practice designs incorporating security principles (such as defence in depth and reduction of blast radius) that meet the Bank’s resiliency expectations.
• Solutions that appropriately balance risks and controls to deliver the agreed business and technology value.
• Adoption of standardised solutions where they fit. If no standard solutions fit, feed into their ongoing evolution where appropriate.
• Fault finding and performance issues support to operational support teams, leveraging available tooling.
• Solution design impact assessment in terms of risk, capacity and cost impact, inc. estimation of project change and ongoing run costs.
• Development of the requisite architecture inputs required to comply with the banks governance processes, including design artefacts required for architecture, privacy, security and records management governance processes.

Embark on a transformative journey as Lead Designer, where you'll spearhead the delivery of the technology stack, using strong analytical and problem-solving skills to understand the business requirements and deliver quality solutions coming up with the process design of the Foundational / Consolidated and Business data Products. You will be working on complex technical problems that will involve detailed analytical skills and analysis. This will be done in conjunction with fellow engineers, business analysts, and business stakeholders.

To be successful as a Lead Designer, you should have experience with: 

• Design and development of solutions as products that can evolve, meeting business requirements that align with modern software engineering practices and automated delivery tooling. This includes identification and implementation of the technologies and platforms.

  
  
  

• Targeted design activities that apply an appropriate workload placement strategy and maximize the benefit of cloud capabilities such as elasticity, serverless, containerisation etc.

  
  
  

• Experience of shaping and defining reusable solutions and architecture across disparate technologies that resolve complex business issues with simple and cost effective technology based solutions. 

  
  
  

• Experience of software and solution design across distributed and integrated architectures. 

  
  
  

• Experience of API & integration strategies both for internal and external consumption. 

  
  
  

• Proven experience designing cloud‑native and hybrid architectures on AWS and Azure, leveraging core services (compute, storage, networking, security, identity) and applying workload placement strategies to maximise elasticity, resilience, and cost efficiency.

  
  
  

Hands‑on expertise implementing solution patterns using serverless, containerisation, event‑driven components and API‑first integration on AWS and Azure, ensuring secure, scalable and compliant architectures aligned with enterprise governance standards.

• Knowledge of technologies that are used by financial service providers. 

  
  
  

• Experience with enterprise data ecosystems, including data modelling, metadata management, and integration with analytics platforms (e.g., data lakes, warehouses), enabling architects to design solutions that support downstream reporting and insight generation.

  
  
  

• Strong understanding of architecture governance and risk processes, including producing high‑quality design artefacts, navigating architecture review boards, and ensuring alignment with organizational controls, compliance, and security standards.
