We are looking for a Senior Performance Engineer to join our mission of protecting the digital world.
You will help drive performance engineering for our endpoint security agent across release cycles: running and evolving performance regression, investigating degradations using system-level tooling, and partnering with R&D on root-cause and prevention.
A large part of the work is based on Windows ETW traces (WPR/WPA) and deep system-level investigations. Our agent runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS and includes both kernel/driver-level and user-mode components. This role is hands-on and technical, with room to contribute to our internal testing framework (C/Rust/Go), metrics pipelines, and Grafana-based reporting depending on your strengths. We value independence and ownership and need someone who can become effective quickly.




WHAT YOU'LL DO



  • Own and run performance regression for each release (stable baselines, repeatable environments, and clear pass/fail decisions)



  • Define performance test strategy for new features with R&D (workloads, success criteria, and guardrails)



  • Investigate performance degradations end-to-end using logs, profiling, and tracing; on Windows, use ETW/WPR/WPA as the primary investigation method



  • Analyze performance impact across kernel/driver-level and user-mode components and communicate findings in an actionable way for R&D



  • Create high-signal bug reports: clear reproduction steps, before/after comparisons, trace/metrics attachments, and suspected root-cause area



  • Contribute to our internal performance testing framework (C/Rust/Go): scenarios, automation, reliability improvements, and analysis helpers



  • Build and maintain Grafana dashboards and performance reports; improve metrics quality and correlation



  • Assist Support with performance-related escalations (typically 1–2 investigations per month): analyze provided traces/logs, coordinate with R&D, and propose next steps; join customer calls on rare occasions as a technical expert



  • Prepare and maintain performance test environments across Windows / Linux / macOS (VMs, snapshots, configurations, and reproducibility)



  • Deploy and operate test builds/agent versions in the lab, interact with internal APIs/services as needed, and build small tools/scripts to accelerate investigations and routine work



  • Maintain and improve a self-managed performance lab (VMs, databases, configs, reproducibility) where improvements are driven by measurable impact on coverage, cycle time, and quality



  • Contribute to performance engineering on Linux and macOS (baselines, scenarios, and tooling) depending on your skills and interests




WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR



  • 5+ years in Performance Engineering, QA Automation, Software Engineering, Support Engineering, or similar technical roles



  • Proven experience investigating performance problems end-to-end (measurements, hypothesis, experiment design, root-cause, validation)



  • Strong Windows practical skills: services/drivers, logs, process/thread inspection, diagnostics, and system tooling



  • Ability to work close to OS boundaries (user-mode vs kernel/driver-level behavior) and reason about performance impact across components



  • Hands-on experience with Windows Performance Toolkit / ETW investigations (WPR/WPA): collecting traces, analyzing them, and turning findings into actionable conclusions



  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (DNS, TLS/certificates, endpoints, basic connectivity troubleshooting)



  • Understanding of HTTP/HTTPS fundamentals and REST API basics



  • Strong scripting ability (Python, Bash, PowerShell) for automation and analysis



  • Experience using AI tools to accelerate engineering/QA workflows (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity, Codeium) with safe handling of data within NDA and company policies



  • Ability to read code and reason about performance implications (not necessarily daily coding, but confident debugging/reading)



  • Hands-on experience deploying/debugging complex software in a lab environment (installers, services, drivers, configuration, versioning)



  • Clear written and verbal communication skills in English (Upper-Intermediate+)



  • Ability to work independently in a small team with high ownership and minimal supervision




Nice to have



  • Deeper Windows internals knowledge (scheduler, IO stack, memory management) and performance profiling experience



  • Systems programming experience (C/C++), or modern systems languages (Rust/Go)



  • Experience contributing to internal test frameworks and tooling



  • Prompt engineering skills (structured prompts, reusable templates, evaluation of outputs)



  • Hands-on experience creating or using small LLM-based assistants (prompt templates, YAML configs, or MCP agents)



  • Linux performance tooling experience (perf, eBPF, system profiling) and/or macOS profiling tools (Instruments, DTrace)



  • Experience with performance metrics/observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana) and data correlation



  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL (metadata, queries for analysis and reporting)



  • Experience with Git, artifact repositories, and test infrastructure engineering



  • Experience with virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V, KVM) and reproducible lab setup



  • Exposure to endpoint security / cybersecurity concepts



  • Experience analyzing customer logs, crash dumps, and real-world telemetry to reproduce issues



  • Experience working in release cycles and collaborating with engineering teams on quality/performance risks




Additional Context



This position is in our Performance Engineering team. Your role is to extend the team’s throughput and impact across multiple areas (regression execution, investigations, framework contributions, dashboards/metrics, and escalations). The primary goal is measurable improvement in performance coverage, shorter feedback cycles, and higher release quality; infrastructure improvements are valuable when they directly support those outcomes.




Priorities



  • Primary (around 70%): Windows performance investigations based on ETW traces (WPR/WPA) and turning findings into actionable next steps for R&D



  • Secondary: performance engineering on Linux and macOS (roughly 0–30% depending on your skills and interests)



  • Secondary: helping Support resolve performance-related escalations (typically 1–2 investigations per month; rare customer calls as an expert)




What success looks like in 3–6 months



  • Several investigated performance degradations backed by ETW evidence and clear next steps for R&D



  • A stable performance regression run with clear pass/fail criteria that supports release decisions
