About CIVIC:
Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) is an international nonprofit with offices around the world working to improve protection for civilians caught in conflict zones. CIVIC envisions a world in which no civilian is harmed in conflict. Our mission is to support communities affected by conflict in their quest for protection and strengthen the resolve and capacity of armed actors to prevent and respond to civilian harm. We are advocates who believe no civilian caught in conflict should be ignored, and advisors who provide practical solutions to preventing and responding to civilian harm. About the Position:
The Communications Officer (CO) will be a key member of CIVIC’s Yemen Program and will also support the broader CIVIC Communications Team in its mission to increase the visibility of the organization and support its advocacy efforts. The CO is a creative initiative-taker who will work closely with the Yemen Country Director, Country Office Program Manager, and CIVIC team in Yemen. They will juggle myriad communications and advocacy needs for the Yemen Program that range from drafting press statements and compelling op-eds on civilian protection; generating social media content; writing and editing blog posts; capturing human-interest stories; and developing and nurturing professional relationships with members of the local press and international correspondents. The CO will also have a supporting role in the production of gender-inclusive high quality research publications and advocacy outputs, as well as assist in the design and launch processes. They will also take a lead on expanding the Yemen Program’s presence on the web and social media networks through the launch and regular maintenance of Arabic-language social media pages and a website. The position requires a journalist’s eye for detail, a marketer’s savvy sense of what catches the online audience’s attention, and a fluency of current international issues surrounding conflict and civilians. The CO is expected to play an important role in linking program interventions at the country level with communications and advocacy efforts at larger scale levels, including the regionally and globally. The CO reports to the Program Manager and supports, whenever needed, our efforts to achieve gender leadership in our programmatic and technical work. The CO will also serve as the primary focal point with HQ on communications-related topics.
