Wood is recruiting for an Intermediate Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer to join its Canadian business focusing on projects across the Mining & Minerals sector. This position is located in either our Vancouver BC, Trail BC, Saskatoon SK, or Burlington ON offices.


The Role


Reporting to the Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls Department Manager, and working alongside other team members locally and across the country, you will be responsible for the review and development of the instrumentation and control designs required on detailed engineering projects; it also includes signing documents as a Professional Engineer. This is a full time position.

Responsibilities:

Typical Responsibilities


  • Serve as the intermediate I&C engineer on a project, working under a senior I&C lead, primarily on Canadian and US projects
  • Work and communicate effectively within a team of I&C engineers and designers, as well as interface with other engineering disciplines, project management team, clients and vendors.
  • Review and/or develop I&C designs for the detailed engineering phases of the project.
  • Specify, select and size instruments and valves for process measurement and control.
  • Select appropriate components for control systems, communication systems and fire detection/alarm systems, and select appropriate cables and panels to complete designs.
  • Prepare instrument, valve and control system procurement packages, including the development and/or review of specifications, datasheets and calculations
  • Prepare technical evaluations of suppliers’ proposals
  • Coordinate and interface with equipment vendors and review vendor documentation.
  • Review and/or develop deliverables that will include control system architecture and block diagrams, communication network drawings, PLC and DCS panel drawings, instrument loop diagrams, junction box wiring diagrams, fire alarm system risers and layouts, instrument indexes, I/O lists, and any others required to complete projects.
  • Authentication (P.Eng stamping) of project discipline deliverables
  • Assist in the creation and update of piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID) and control narratives.
  • Assist in the preparation of construction contracts and scope of work.
  • Assist in writing work plans and reports in a concise technical manner according to the applicable project specifics.
  • Ensure all deliverables are developed in accordance with the project requirements, applicable standards and codes, and the company’s quality specifications.
  • Attend site visits to collect data as required for projects.
  • Balance and meet deadlines on multiple ongoing projects.

Expected:


  • Electrical Engineering (BSc) degree with specializations or experience in instrumentation / controls
  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, or Ontario or have the ability to register as one within approximately 3 months of hire. (PE in the US is an asset)
  • Minimum of 4-6 years of experience; primarily responsible for supporting I&C engineering consulting projects for mining, metallurgical or similar process industries.
  • Knowledge of CSA, ISA and IEEE standards including the Canadian Electrical Code and how to apply them to designs.
  • Everyday use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Team player, but also able to work independently and take responsibility.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Authorization to lawfully work in Canada without sponsorship from Wood is required.
  • Database experience is considered an asset (AVEVA Instrumentation and/or SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI)).
  • Working knowledge of 2D and 3D software is considered an asset (AutoCAD, AVEVA E3D)
