Job Description Summary


As a PhD Intern – you will collaboratively execute applied research in computational aerodynamics for GE Aerospace commercial engine programs and technology demonstration programs such as RISE (Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines). You will be a key member of a team of technologists and engineers at GE Aerospace Research collaborating with the GE Aerospace business teams to deliver on our commitment to sustainability, safety and quality for our customers while advancing aerospace and defense for future generations.
This is a paid internship and is typically structured for a 3-month period or upon completion of PhD thesis defense whichever is earlier. It may be extended or converted to a full-time employment based on performance, mutual interests, and business/program needs/funding.

Established in 2000, the John F. Welch Technology Center (JFWTC) in Bengaluru is our multidisciplinary research and engineering center. Engineers and scientists at JFWTC have contributed to hundreds of aviation patents, pioneering breakthroughs in engine technologies, advanced materials, and additive manufacturing


Roles Overview:


  • Apply your knowledge in computational aerodynamics to develop innovative aerothermal-mechanical solutions for aircraft engine technologies.
  • Specifically, apply your expertise in computational aerodynamics to execute modeling and simulation studies and analyses to extract and provide insights into key flow physics
  • Deliver on assigned technical project(s) with guidance to meet project requirements
  • Participate in a team on technology programs, while demonstrating independence in executing tasks leveraging your technical skills

Ideal Candidate:


Should be pursuing PhD but not submitted thesis


Required Qualifications:


  • Completed Ph.D. thesis research work in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering specializing in Computational Aerodynamics; you should have approval from your University & Doctoral Advisor to pursue this internship opportunity.
  • Fundamental knowledge in aerodynamics, evidenced by advanced graduate coursework and research
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in computational aerodynamics modeling, simulation & analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in using in-house industrial or academic codes or in-commercial CFD codes
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

Desired Qualifications:


  • Doctoral level research in aerodynamics.
  • Programming skills in Python, MATLAB, FORTRAN, C, C++
  • Computational Aerodynamics projects with demonstrated ability to set-up, execute and post-process simulations, from “start-to-finish” with a reasonable degree of independence
  • Experience in using large computer clusters to run large simulations
  • Humble: respectful, receptive, agile, eager to learn
  • Transparent: shares critical information, speaks with candor, contributes constructively
  • Focused: quick learner, strategically prioritizes work, committed
  • Leadership ability: strong communicator, decision-maker, collaborative
