Your role and responsibilities

DB2 on z/OS Data and Performance Management Engineer



We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced DB2 on z/OS Data and Performance Management Engineer to join our team. This pivotal role involves designing, implementing, administering, and optimizing critical database systems within our mainframe environment, ensuring high performance, security, and compliance with industry regulations.



Your role and responsibilities



  • Database Design & Administration: Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of robust DB2 for z/OS and VSAM data structures. This includes capacity planning, database reorganization strategies, and data modeling to support enterprise applications.
  • Performance Management & Tuning: Monitor system performance using relevant tools, identify bottlenecks, and implement effective tuning solutions for SQL queries, database configurations, and overall subsystem health.
  • Systems Programming Support: Utilize z/OS utilities, JCL, and REXX for automation, batch processing, and system maintenance tasks, ensuring efficient operation of the DB2 environment.
  • Security & Compliance: Implement and manage security protocols utilizing ESM tools (RACF, ACF2, or TopSecret) to control database access. Ensure all database designs and operations adhere strictly to regulatory standards and secure design principles.
  • API Development Support: Collaborate with development teams, providing expertise in data access methods and supporting the development and integration of APIs that interact with backend data systems.
  • USS Environment: Work within the z/OS Unix System Services (USS) environment as needed for tool integration, scripting, and file management.
  • Troubleshooting & Support: Provide expert-level support for production issues, diagnosing complex data integrity problems and performance issues quickly and effectively.

Required technical and professional expertise
  • 8+ years of IT experience
  • Extensive Mainframe Expertise: Proven, hands-on experience with DB2 on z/OS database design, administration, and performance management.
  • VSAM Knowledge: Solid experience in VSAM data structure design and administration.
  • Core Mainframe Technologies: Proficiency in JCL (Job Control Language) and REXX scripting for automation and system management.
  • Security Management: Expertise in mainframe security administration using one or more Enterprise Security Managers (ESM) such as RACF, ACF2, or TopSecret.
  • API Experience: Demonstrated experience in supporting or developing APIs, understanding how modern applications interface with mainframe data.
  • Compliance & Secure Design: Deep knowledge of best practices for data security, risk management, and compliance with industry regulations (e.g., GDPR, PCI-DSS, SOX).
  • Operating Systems: Familiarity with the z/OS environment and practical experience working within the Unix System Services (USS) component



Preferred technical and professional experience
  • IMS Database Experience: Experience with IMS DB (Database) administration or application support is a significant advantage, providing expertise across our mixed database environment.
  • Python Scripting: Experience using Python for automation, data analysis, or scripting tasks on or off the mainframe, potentially within the z/OS USS environment.
  • Java Application Knowledge: Understanding of Java application connectivity to DB2/zOS (e.g., JDBC, Type 2/Type 4 drivers) and experience troubleshooting Java-related data access performance is a plus.
  • DevOps and CI/CD Pipelines: Experience integrating mainframe database management tasks into modern DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines, utilizing tools like Jenkins, Git, or Ansible for automated deployments.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications in DB2 administration or z/OS systems programming are a plus.
