Business Data Technologies (BDT) is Amazon's central analytics powerhouse that accelerates data-driven innovation across the company by enabling next-generation analytics and machine learning at scale while raising the bar on global customer trust. We develop and manage the repository for all Amazon business data, enabling teams to catalog, discover, share, and govern data at scale using our suite of enterprise products built using modern cloud technologies.
As a Software Development Manager in BDT, you'll lead a team building green field data solutions that serve hundreds of teams across Amazon—from our flagship Andes data marketplace to serverless compute platforms. You'll have the opportunity to solve complex distributed systems challenges, and directly impact how Amazon leverages its vast data assets to drive business decisions.
We are seeking an experienced Software Development Manager to lead critical datalake initiatives with a durable charter. This role offers the opportunity to drive innovation at massive scale, building foundational services that power AI solutions across Amazon.
Key job responsibilities
- Build new services that enable horizontal scaling of datalake components, supporting exponential data growth without proportional cost increases
- Develop services for accelerating time-to-insight for functions that are critical for accelerating decision making across Amazon teams
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and execute on multi-year roadmaps
- Lead the development of intelligent data optimization services that reduce total cost of ownership by order of magnitude while improving query performance across petabyte-scale datasets
- Influence architecture decisions that impact Amazon's data infrastructure at scale
- Drive continuous improvement in system reliability, performance, and cost efficiency
- Drive automated frameworks that detect and prevent data anomalies at ingestion time, ensuring downstream analytics and ML models operate on trusted, high-quality data
- Architect and deliver highly scalable solutions that enable AI-based capabilities for Amazon teams worldwide
- Partner with AWS teams to deliver on multiple VP+ level goals and strategic initiatives

- Drive hiring, development, and retention of top engineering talent
- Partner with AWS teams and org leaders to drive critical capabilities enabling Amazon teams
- Set technical direction and establish best practices for the team
- 7+ years of engineering experience
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
