Job Description

As a Usability Engineer in MTRG HPM, you ensure that Philips patient monitoring solutions deliver a safe, intuitive, effective, and regulatory‑compliant user experience. You will independently drive usability work packages within projects, collaborating closely with R&D, Systems, Clinical, Design, and Quality teams.



This role aligns with the senior capability level, where the engineer drives project scope mostly independently and contributes usability expertise across the HPM portfolio

This role ensures that Philips HPM solutions deliver safe and intuitive user experiences aligned with global regulatory expectations and frontline healthcare needs





Key Responsibilities



  • Execute usability activities in accordance with IEC 62366‑1, FDA HFE guidance, and Philips Usability Process standards.



  • Conduct use specification definition, task analysis, hazard‑related use scenario identification, and usability risk mitigation planning.



  • Lead usability FMEA development and updates as part of HPM’s safety risk management workflow.



  • Deliver usability engineering documentation and contribute to the Usability Engineering File for medical devicess.



  • Plan, execute, and report usability formative studies (concept tests, UI prototypes, workflow validations).



  • Support and conduct summative usability evaluations for applicable medical devices in HPM.



  • Translate evaluation results into actionable design requirements and risk mitigations.



  • Collaborate with Systems, Clinical, UX, Software, and Verification teams to ensure usability is embedded in the end‑to‑end development cycle.



  • Participate in requirement reviews and provide usability input into system and UI/UX design.



  • Support HPM R&D teams in integrating usability throughout regulatory and design controls.



  • Conduct contextual inquiries with clinicians, technicians, biomedical engineers, and other healthcare users.



  • Analyze user feedback, post‑market data, and field insights to identify usability problems and improvement opportunities.



  • Create high‑quality usability engineering deliverables, including:



    • Use specifications



    • Task analyses



    • Usability FMEA



    • Formative/summative protocols & reports



    • Inputs to the usability engineering file



    • Maintain traceability to risks, requirements, and design mitigations throughout the PDLM process.






You're the right fit if:



  • Degree in Human Factors Engineering, HCI, Cognitive Science, Industrial/Interaction Design, Biomedical Engineering, or relevant domain.



  • 6+ years of usability engineering experience, preferably in medical devices or healthcare technology.



  • Experience supporting product development in regulated environments is a strong advantage.



  • Hands-on familiarity with usability methods (use scenarios, heuristic analysis, formative/summative testing).



  • Understanding of patient monitoring workflows, alarms, and clinical environments is preferred.



  • Ability to work with low/mid‑fidelity prototypes, UX tools, and risk analysis frameworks.



  • Strong communication and documentation abilities.



  • Ability to work independently at a CG60 level while engaging cross‑functional teams.



  • Analytical thinking, structured problem-solving, and attention to detail.
